In base agli studi condotti, si stima che l&#8217;esposizione al piombo sia responsabile dello 0,6% del carico globale di malattie, e si ritiene che tale carico sia pi\u00f9 elevato nelle regioni in via di sviluppo. Si stima, inoltre, che l&#8217;esposizione al piombo nell&#8217;infanzia contribuisca a circa 600.000 nuovi casi all&#8217;anno di disabilit\u00e0 intellettiva nei bambini. Le riduzioni negli ultimi due decenni dell&#8217;utilizzo del piombo nella benzina, nelle vernici, nell&#8217;idraulica e nelle saldature hanno determinato una riduzione sostanziale dei livelli di piombo nel sangue. Il minerale di piombo concentrato viene inserito in una macchina di sinterizzazione con ferro, silice, flux disincrostante, coke, cenere di sodio, pirite, zinco, sostanze caustiche o particelle di controllo dell&#8217;inquinamento. La miscela viene sottoposta ad aria calda per bruciare lo zolfo e inviata alla fonderia.\n\nIl piombo viene solitamente fuso in un altoforno utilizzando il carbonio della macchina di sinterizzazione come fonte di calore. Quando ha luogo la fusione, nell&#8217;altoforno si formano diversi strati. Lo strato di piombo fuso si deposita sul fondo del forno. Uno strato di elementi pi\u00f9 leggeri, tra cui arsenico e antimonio, galleggia in alto, il cosiddetto &#8220;speiss&#8221;.  I solfuri di rame e altri metalli formano, inoltre, uno strato &#8220;opaco&#8221;. Infine, si forma uno strato di scorie da alto forno, contenente principalmente silicati.
