UNICOIL a décelé des quantités importantes de plomb dans certaines peintures utilisées pour les produits en acier galvanisé prélaqué et dans le zinc utilisé pour les produits en acier galvanisé commercialisés en Arabie saoudite et dans les États membres du Conseil de Coopération du Golfe. Des études ont montré que l’exposition au plomb représentait 0,6 % de la charge mondiale de morbidité, cette charge étant maximale dans les régions en voie de développement. On estime que l’exposition des enfants au plomb contribue à environ 600 000 nouveaux cas de déficiences intellectuelles chez l’enfant, par an. Ces vingt dernières années, les réductions de l’utilisation du plomb dans l’essence, la peinture, la plomberie et le soudage ont entraîné des réductions substantielles des niveaux de plomb dans le sang. Toutefois, des sources importantes d’exposition demeurent, notamment dans les pays en voie de développement. Il existe une abondante littérature dans le domaine publique sur le plomb.     Données élémentaires sur l’élément plomb
    Le plomb est un élément mou, très malléable et ductile. Il a une coloration blanche bleutée et un éclat très brillant. Il est fortement résistant à la corrosion et il est parfois allié à l’antimoine, qui sert de durcisseur. Le plomb est un métal hautement toxique lorsqu’il est inhalé ou avalé, et une exposition prolongée au plomb peut être nocive. Le plomb dans sa forme élémentaire est très rare dans la nature. On le trouve couramment sous forme de galène (PbS) et on l’extrait via un processus de grillage. Il est également présent dans l’anglésite, la cérusite et le minium.

    Traitement du plomb
    La production de plomb primaire commence par frittage. Le minerai de plomb concentré est introduit dans un four de frittage avec du fer, de la silice, de la chaux, du coke, du carbonate de soude, de la pyrite, du zinc, des substances caustiques ou des particules de contrôle de pollution. Le mélange est soumis à un balayage d’air chaud afin de brûler le soufre, puis envoyé à la fonderie. Le plomb est généralement fondu dans un haut fourneau utilisant le carbone provenant du four de frittage comme source de chaleur. Lorsque la fusion intervient, plusieurs couches se forment dans le four. La couche de plomb fondu descend au fond du four. Une couche formée des éléments les plus légers, dont l’arsenic et l’antimoine, flotte en surface et est appelée le « speiss ». Une couche de « matte » se forme également à partir du cuivre et des sulfures métalliques. Enfin, une couche de laitier de haut fourneau, composée principalement de silicates, apparaît également. Le speiss et la matte sont habituellement vendus à des fonderies de cuivre pour y être raffinés pour le traitement du cuivre. Le laitier est stocké et partiellement recyclé, si le contenu métallique est suffisant.

    Effet du plomb sur les performances de l’acier galvanisé
    Le plomb s’évapore seulement à une température de 1 648 °C et comme une part du plomb est soluble dans l’acier, proportionnellement moins de plomb s’évapore que de zinc. Toutefois, il ne faut pas inhaler les vapeurs d’oxyde de plomb, et les pratiques recommandées ci-dessous pour éviter d’inhaler des vapeurs d’oxyde de zinc empêchent également l’inhalation des oxydes de plomb. Un problème se pose également avec le plomb résiduel lorsque des enfants sont en contact avec des produits galvanisés, par exemple des équipements de jeu sans un revêtement supérieur de haute qualité. Certains fabricants de produits galvanisés utilisent du zinc pur à 99,99 %, de sorte que la présence de plomb ne pose pas de problème lors du soudage de ces produits ou par contact.
